Mandatory gas inspection in Barcelona: how often
In short
According to the Generalitat, your home's gas installation must undergo a periodic inspection every five years, carried out by the distribution company or a registered gas installer company. The regulation gives the holder the right to freely choose the company that carries out the check.123
How often is it done and what is checked?
The technical regulation on the distribution and use of gaseous fuels sets the inspection every five years, within the calendar year in which the period from commissioning or from the last inspection expires.1 It is the obligation of the holder of the installation or, failing that, of the user to carry out the periodic checks.1
For installations of up to 70 kW, the regulation states that the inspection runs from the user's valve to the gas appliances, including them. It basically checks tightness, condition, hygienic combustion of the appliances, ventilation and the minimum volume of the room, gas detection systems and the evacuation of combustion products.1
This guide covers only the inspection of the gas installation; boiler maintenance is a separate matter that we do not cover here.
Who carries it out and can I choose the company?
According to the regulation, the inspection is carried out by a registered gas installer company or by the distributor.1 The holder has the right to freely choose the company that carries out the periodic check and any adjustments arising from it.1
The regulation provides that the distributor must notify users three months in advance of the obligation to inspect. If it does not receive the certificate by the deadline stated, it is understood that the holder wants the distributor to carry it out, which will notify the date and time at least five days in advance.1
The Catalan Consumer Agency summarises this for domestic natural gas: the distributor gives notice three months in advance and allows a period to book it with whichever company you choose, including a registered gas installer company. If you have said nothing once the period has passed, the distributor carries it out after notifying you of the date and time, and the chosen company reports the result to the distributor.3 You can consult the Consum page on natural gas.
You are not obliged to hire whoever calls you: you can choose a company or wait for the distributor's notice.13
This guide has not been able to confirm which company distributes gas to your home or its notification channel.
If the inspection finds faults
According to the regulation, the inspection is carried out by a registered installer. A favourable result issues an inspection certificate with a copy to the holder, and if there are faults a report is given with a deadline for correction. The same company or installer that carries out the inspection may not repair them.1
The regulation considers any leak to be major. Major faults lead to the supply being cut off and the affected part or appliance being sealed if they are not corrected on the spot. For secondary tightness failures there is a period of fifteen working days, and the holder or user is responsible for correcting the faults with a registered installer.1
According to the Catalan Consumer Agency, with a favourable result the inspection certificate is valid for five years, and if there are faults a period is given to correct them, and the company that repairs them sends the new certificate to the distributor.3
And if I use bottled gas (butane)?
The regulation provides that receiving installations not supplied from distribution networks, for example with bottled gas, are subject to a periodic inspection every five years, which the holder or user must arrange with a gas installer company.1
The Generalitat states the same: periodic inspection every five years carried out by a registered gas installer company, with a favourable periodic inspection certificate.2
This guide does not cover penalties for failing the inspection or supply cuts for that reason, because we have not read an official source that allows us to state them. Nor does it give advice on what to do if you smell gas.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know the visit is genuine?
According to the Catalan Consumer Agency, you must be wary of unscheduled visits from companies that turn up to carry out the inspection, and if in doubt it is advisable to contact the company named on your bill. The same page states that they can never ask you for cash.
How much does the inspection cost?
This guide gives no figures because the official sources we have read do not publish any amount. The regulation states that the cost is passed on to the user and that, if the distributor carries it out, it may not exceed the regulated costs. According to the Catalan Consumer Agency, the inspection is charged only on the supply bill.
Does Barcelona have different rules?
The sources we have read are from the State and the Generalitat, and none is from the Ajuntament. For that reason this guide explains the Catalan and state rule and does not claim that Barcelona has its own rule. Check the municipal website if you need to confirm it.
