Dog vaccinations in Barcelona
In short
Core vaccines are those that all dogs should receive, taking into account their lifestyle and the areas where they live or to which they travel. The vaccines for dogs that are core worldwide protect against distemper (CDV), canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV) and canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV). The remaining vaccines, and each dog's schedule, you decide with your vet.123456

Core and non-core vaccines: what changes
Dog vaccines are divided into core and non-core, and the difference lies in whom they are recommended for. Core vaccines are those that all dogs should receive, according to their lifestyle and the areas where they live or to which they travel.1 Worldwide they are those that protect against distemper, canine adenovirus type 1 and canine parvovirus type 2.1
Some vaccines become core depending on the place:
- Rabies: where rabies is endemic, WSAVA considers rabies vaccination of dogs and cats essential, even if there is no legal obligation.1 Ask your vet what this means for your dog.
- Leptospirosis: where canine leptospirosis is endemic, the serogroups involved are known and suitable vaccines exist, WSAVA strongly recommends vaccinating all dogs against leptospirosis and considers those vaccines core in those places.1
Non-core vaccines are recommended according to geographical area and the animal's lifestyle, for example outdoor access or living with other pets.1
Vaccinating more than necessary also has a downside: vaccines should not be given without need, and core vaccines should not be given to adult animals more often than necessary.1 If a vaccination plan seems excessive or scant to you, ask your vet why they propose it.
Puppies: why several doses are needed
Vaccines for puppies are given in several doses because maternally derived antibodies interfere significantly with the effectiveness of most of the core vaccines given early in life.1 Because of that interference, WSAVA recommends giving several doses of core vaccines to puppies and kittens.1
This page does not state weeks, intervals or specific schedules. Your puppy's schedule is set by your vet.1
Which vaccines are compulsory in Catalonia?
In Catalonia, the competent authorities may order compulsory vaccination or treatment of animal diseases for reasons of animal health or public health.2 Vets who carry out compulsory vaccinations and treatments must keep a file with the clinical record of the animals treated.2
The sources cited on this page do not state which vaccines are compulsory for a dog in Catalonia. So we cannot tell you whether a specific vaccine is. To find out, ask your vet or the competent authority.
Who decides your dog's vaccination schedule
Your dog's schedule is something you decide with your vet. Non-core vaccines are chosen in a conversation between vet and owner for each animal.1
The WSAVA guidelines offer general guidance to vets and do not describe compulsory or minimum standards of care.1 That is why a schedule published on the internet, including one based on those guidelines, does not replace the plan your vet proposes.
WSAVA also encourages explaining to owners the value of regular check-ups (normally annual, sometimes more frequent) instead of talking only about "vaccination appointments".1
Identification and census: what your vet should remind you of
In Catalonia, the vet must inform the owner of the obligation to identify their animal if it is of a species for which identification is compulsory and it is not identified, and to register it in the municipal census or in the General Register of companion animals.2 If they do not mention it at the vaccination appointment and your dog is not identified, you can ask about it yourself.
When it is an emergency
The sources cited on this page do not describe reactions after a vaccine. The general criteria for an emergency are these:
- Emergency care usually starts with a phone call to the vet, who can give first-aid and safe transport instructions and helps the clinic prepare for your arrival.3
- Poisoning, severe pain, serious or uncontrolled bleeding and difficulty breathing are among the examples of emergencies that require immediate veterinary care.3
If your dog shows poisoning, severe pain, serious or uncontrolled bleeding or difficulty breathing, call your clinic or an emergency centre immediately.
Is there a vaccination schedule for dogs?
We do not publish a vaccination schedule for dogs. Which vaccines your dog receives is something you decide with your vet according to the area and the animal's lifestyle.1 Puppies are recommended several doses of the core vaccines.1
Signs to seek care without waiting
- Poisoning, severe pain, severe or uncontrolled bleeding or difficulty breathing: these are examples of emergencies that need immediate veterinary care.
- Before you go: phone the clinic; it can give you first aid and safe transport instructions.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a vaccination schedule for dogs?
This page does not publish a schedule or administration plans: which vaccines your dog receives and when is something you decide with your vet, according to the area and the animal's lifestyle. Puppies are recommended several doses of the core vaccines, and it is the vet who sets the plan.
Who decides which vaccines my dog needs?
Non-core vaccines are chosen in a conversation between the vet and the owner for each animal. The WSAVA guidelines are general guidance and do not describe compulsory or minimum standards.
Does the dog have to be identified before being vaccinated?
In Catalonia, the vet must inform the owner of the obligation to identify their animal if it is of a species for which identification is compulsory and it is not identified, and to register it in the municipal census or in the General Register of companion animals.
