veterinary care services in Barcelona

  • 24-hour emergency vet

A veterinary emergency is a sudden and serious problem that needs rapid medical attention. Call first: the vet can give you first-aid and safe transport instructions. Do not muzzle a dog with chest injuries or a short-nosed dog, and do not remove embedded objects. Heatstroke is an emergency and short-nosed dogs can suffer it even on cold days.

  • Cat neutering

The state law on the protection of animal rights and welfare requires all cats to be microchipped and surgically sterilised before six months of age, except those registered as breeding animals in the name of a registered breeder. The law defines sterilisation as a surgical or medicinal procedure carried out by registered veterinary professionals. According to the regulation of the Barcelona professional college, it is major surgery that requires a separate operating theatre, medical gases and anaesthetic monitoring. For community cats, the law requires a microchip in the name of the local authority and surgical sterilisation. The cited sources do not detail the age, the risks of anaesthesia or aftercare: ask your vet.

  • Cat vaccinations

Core vaccines are those that all cats should receive, and they protect against feline parvovirus, feline calicivirus and feline herpesvirus type 1. Non-core vaccines depend on the area and lifestyle, and are chosen with the vet. The feline leukaemia vaccine depends on outdoor access and on living with other cats.

  • Cat vet and feline medicine

What distinguishes a good clinic for cats is handling. Fear is the most common cause of aggression in cats at the consultation, and cat-friendly handling techniques should reduce those problems.

  • Dental cleaning for dogs and cats

According to WSAVA, professional teeth cleaning is carried out under general anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation. Dentistry without anaesthesia is not medically beneficial. Before the cleaning the vet must carry out a complete physical and oral examination, and the aim is to assess the periodontal tissues and the whole oral cavity as well as to clean. At home, brushing is the most effective means of mechanically removing plaque. For the risks of anaesthesia and the frequency, ask your vet.

  • Dog neutering

In Catalonia, the sterilisation of companion animals must always be carried out under veterinary supervision. The rule consulted does not state any general obligation for all dogs. In Catalonia, dogs must be identified with an approved microchip. It is major surgery carried out in an operating theatre, as we explain in where the operation takes place. The cited sources do not detail the age, heat, the risks of anaesthesia or aftercare: ask your vet.

  • Dog vaccinations

Core vaccines are those that all dogs should receive, and they protect against distemper, canine adenovirus type 1 and canine parvovirus type 2. Non-core vaccines depend on the area and lifestyle, and are chosen with the vet. Vaccines should not be given without need.

  • Exotic animal vet

Always ask the clinic whether it treats your species, because not all of them treat the same ones. The vet's experience with your animal matters, and with ferrets it can be hard to find. The vet should be well informed and nearby.

  • General vet consultation

  • Microchipping for dogs and cats

In Catalonia, dogs, cats and ferrets must have an approved microchip, and only a vet may implant it. Each microchip is associated with a number that must be linked to the details of the owner or keeper. The animal must be identified before it is registered in the municipal census or in the General Register.

  • Worming dogs and cats

There is no single schedule: the risk persists throughout life and the schedule is set by your vet according to the needs of each animal. Control can be through regular treatments or diagnostic tests, and faecal tests are an alternative to regular treatments.

  • Home visit vet

A home-visit vet is for first-need care at home, and only registered staff may practise. They cannot perform surgery or sterilisations, and the regulation reserves hospitalisation, isolation and urgent clinical tests for clinics or hospitals.

Signs to seek care without waiting

    • Poisoning, severe pain, severe or uncontrolled bleeding or difficulty breathing: these are examples of emergencies that need immediate veterinary care.
    • Before you go: phone the clinic; it can give you first aid and safe transport instructions.
