Surgery, clinic or hospital: what changes
The regulation for professional practice in companion animal clinics defines the type of health care that can be provided in each type of centre: surgery, clinic, hospital and referral centre. It also separates major surgery from minor surgery.1
A surgery must meet minimum equipment requirements: hot and cold water, medical-surgical and sterilisation equipment, a microscope, a thermometer, a stethoscope, a resuscitation bag and endotracheal tubes.1
Major surgery includes sterilisations and, according to the regulation, requires a separate operating theatre, medical gases and anaesthetic monitoring.1 So if your animal needs an operation of that kind, it is worth asking beforehand whether the centre can do it or whether it will refer you elsewhere.
The cited sources do not say which type of centre is better for a general consultation, nor do they compare the quality of one with the other, so the type of centre is not in itself a reason to choose one or the other.
How to check a centre and find the nearest one
The regulation replaces the responsible vet with a medical director. Only a registered veterinarian can hold the post, and the director guarantees the truthfulness of the commercial information about the establishment's service.1
To find a centre, the search tool of the Barcelona Official College of Veterinarians helps you locate the nearest veterinary centre. It also offers lists of veterinary centres, of registered professionals, of professional companies and of companion animal vets who make home visits.2
When it is an emergency
The general criteria for an emergency are these:
- Emergency care usually starts with a phone call to the vet, who can give first-aid and safe transport instructions and helps the clinic prepare for your arrival.3
- Poisoning, severe pain, serious or uncontrolled bleeding and difficulty breathing are among the examples of emergencies that require immediate veterinary care.3
If your animal shows poisoning, severe pain, serious or uncontrolled bleeding or difficulty breathing, call your clinic or an emergency centre immediately.
Signs to seek care without waiting
- Poisoning, severe pain, severe or uncontrolled bleeding or difficulty breathing: these are examples of emergencies that need immediate veterinary care.
- Before you go: phone the clinic; it can give you first aid and safe transport instructions.
