We show 12 of the 17 centres entered in Barcelona: first those that publish these specialities and then in alphabetical order, without any assessment.
Informational list of centres entered in the public register, without recommendation or assessment. If you are a professional and want to correct or remove your entry, see the methodology.
Do you want to know how we choose and order the centres? This is how we do it.
First steps after a death
One of the first procedures is the certificate of last wills. The Ministry of Justice states that it cannot be requested until 15 working days have passed since the date of death.2 Anyone requesting it by non-electronic means must attach the full death certificate of the deceased person.2
If the deceased left no will, the rights of the surviving spouse or of the partner in a stable couple are expressly assigned in the declaration of heirs ab intestato, which can be made by a notarial deed of notoriety.1 This page gives no further detail on that case because the reviewed sources do not cover it. Ask the lawyer which route applies to you.
Accept, renounce or accept with benefit of inventory
The person called to the inheritance may freely accept or renounce it.1 The right to accept or renounce is not subject to a deadline,1 but renunciation must be made expressly in a public document.1
If you choose to accept with an inventory, it must be drawn up within six months of the heir knowing, or being reasonably able to know, of the call to the inheritance,1 and it must be formalised before a notary.1
Risks and limits, without embellishment: renouncing is done in a public document and the sources we have read do not say it can be undone, so it is worth consulting before signing. The inventory has a six-month deadline,1 and this page does not explain the consequences of missing it because the sources do not cover them. A lawyer can explain what each option means in your case, but it is best not to choose any of them under pressure from anyone.
Inheritance tax deadline in Catalonia
The Agència Tributària de Catalunya states that the deadline to file and pay the inheritance tax self-assessment is six months from the date of death of the deceased.3 During the first five months after the death, an extension of the deadline for a further six months can be requested.3
Accepting or renouncing has no deadline,1 but the tax does. If you do not know how the two fit together in your case, that is a good reason to consult early. This page does not state how much tax is paid, because we do not have those figures in the reviewed sources.
When to consult a lawyer
- A legal deadline is running: inheritance tax has a deadline from the death3 and the extension must be requested within the stated period.3 If you do not know since when it runs in your case, consult soon rather than wait.
- There is a risk to your safety or your family's: go to the emergency services first. Legal help comes afterwards.
Outside those cases, many decisions about an inheritance can be taken calmly, and consulting is your choice and not an obligation.
What to bring to the first consultation
It helps to bring:
- The full death certificate.
- The certificate of last wills, if you have already requested it, and a copy of the will if you have one.
- The DNI or NIE of the people who may inherit and a list of the assets and debts you know of.
- The date of death, to calculate the deadlines.
And questions worth asking before hiring:
- Which deadlines are running in your case and since when.
- Which procedures the lawyer would carry out and which you or a notary would have to do.
- How the service is charged, what it includes and what it does not, in writing.
How to check a lawyer with the ICAB
Before hiring, check that the person is registered in the professionals search of the Il·lustre Col·legi de l'Advocacia de Barcelona (ICAB). Search for their name and verify that they appear as a practising member. This page does not certify any lawyer or recommend anyone in particular.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a lawyer to make a will?
The sources we have reviewed for this page do not say that a lawyer is needed to make a will, and we will not claim it. If you want someone to review your case, for example because of the legitime (legítima), which is a quarter of the base amount that results from applying the rules of article 451-5 of the Código Civil de Cataluña, ask at the first consultation what each professional contributes and what risks each option carries.
